Adjective-less marriages and a hypocritical moral high-horse

This year will be looked at by future generations as a time that the tides are finally turning on the American landscape.  Americans, by and large, either have no opinion or a positive opinion on gay marriage.  It seems that only the most socially conservative (read Tea Party Patriots) want their names associated with disliking gay marriage on the basis of sodomy.

Luckily for us, they have a new tactic to protect us from the growing homosexual agenda in the liberal media: State’s rights.  If you haven’t been living under a rock, countless numbers of states (our fine state included) have been forced by activist federal judges to allow gay marriage against the will of the people.

OK guys… I can’t do this.
Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that I can minimize the use of the term gay marriage.  I hate that term.  As a former English major, I learned that adjectives can be friends and enemies.  In this particular case, the adjective seems unnecessary.  I want to talk about marriage.  All of it.  Straight folks have plenty of problems on this front too.

The divorce rate in Oklahoma is over 50%.  That number includes the God-fearing Tea Partiers too.  Talk about family values… If we have a problem on that front, I don’t think it came from our Pride folks.  I’m all for social programs to promote family values and healthy marriages, but it is time to stop trying to legislate someone’s viewpoints on sex and sexuality.  After all, if we are going to use the laws of Leviticus, we should have stoned our fine governor after her first divorce.  Also, I shouldn’t be eating my weight in bacon… and I’m unwilling to live in that world.

Mary Fallin says that the will of the people should be used to decide who can and can’t get married.  The will of the majority should never be used to decide what is ethically right and wrong.  Women may have never voted in America if we let male voters decide whether or not they could come to the table.  There might still be slavery in select Confederate states if Lincoln just said, “Hey guys, let your people make that call.”

I’m tired of the hypocrisy.  I’m tired of hearing, “It’s the will of the people.”  I’m tired of hearing about marriage period in the eyes of the State.  There were a lot of eye rolls when Rep. Mike Turner (R-Edmond) wanted to ban all marriage.  He was doing it in a very contrarian way that I don’t support.  But, I completely agree with him.  I completely understand that the word marriage is a charged word that means something very specific to some church folks.

Maybe it’s time for the government to get out of the marriage business.  But what about my taxes, Mike?  I think that it might be beneficial to use the term Civil Union.  The union between two individuals and their property / money is really all that should concern the government anyway.  Why do we care so much about who can get married?  If the Tea Party wants their word back, they can have it.  The IRS can sort out the financial unions of individuals for whatever reason they choose.  Plural marriage between consenting adults? I don’t think I care about this one either.

I’m just ready to allow the government to get out of the morality game all together (unless it is to protect minority opinions) .  It’s time.  As long as they stay in, someone is going to be offended that it is not their version of morality.
